Chris Burden
With the performance, installation and sculptures of Chris Burden, the Middelheimmuseum will once again shine the spotlight on a pioneering artist.
The American Chris Burden (°1946) can without exaggeration be regarded a key player in contemporary art. His performances in the 1970s redefined the possibilities of the medium; the sculptures and installations he made in later years opened up new horizons of what is physically possible in visual arts.
With his celebrated early performances, such as Shoot (1971), or Trans-fixed (1974), he not only established his reputation as an infamous iconoclast, he furthermore created a number of absolute icons of contemporary art quite early on in his career.
The exhibition at the Middelheimmuseum demonstrates that much has changed in the language of communication of the artist since those first hard-hitting performances, yet that the same basic ideas live on. It offers viewers a unique combination of work from the early stages of Burden’s career as well as some of his recent work.
Beam Drop Antwerp
The highlight of the exhibition is Beam Drop Antwerp. This sculpture will be constructed live before a large audience on May 30. Chris Burden will display a selection of his Bridges in the Braem Pavilion and the Middelheim Castle. These scale models of special bridges from around the world are completely made from Meccano and the American version Erector.
With the performance, installation and sculptures of Chris Burden, the Middelheimmuseum will once again shine the spotlight on a pioneering artist, an artist who not only changed the history of visual arts for good 30 years ago, but is reinventing modern sculpture singlehandedly today.

The idea of this exhibition is to approach the historical theme of self-portraits and to bring it into a contemporary art context. A self-portrait is a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. Although self-portraits have been made by artists since the earliest times, it is not until the Early Renaissance in the mid 1400s that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture... We laugh today at how the Saturnites once misjudged the Martian rebellion, but how greater our own delusion as it rises to fill from
one end to the other all that we can see? How wide the great reaches of intergalactic space. How enormous the beast that can fill it up.
The deepest origins are necessarily dark. But in primordial time a monkey on the shores of Gondwanaland watched a monster arise
from the surface of a sea. The monkey could not yet phrase the question: What beast has arisen whose comprehension is darker,
colder, more glittering and eldridge than this great monster?
There came then the mainstream, a milk and honey-rich way. For megaannua the beast bathed free in a literal, not figural, Garden of
Eden near Gobekli Tepe between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. The beast's pleasure at this time was personal. As it indulged, it
looked away from itself. The monkey screamed.
Instantly, religion, mysticism and poetry rose up and by means of agriculture covered over the Tigris Euphrates Valley. They buried
the mainstream and reported it dead. The monkey now beheld the monster occupying a space not much larger than the eye of a needle.
Still, on what were now the shores of New Zealand, the monkey screamed.
And while it did the monster fed. Eventually it came to satire. Of all it tasted it liked satire the best. Through satire the beast gained
direct access to delectibles that layered out the mainstream in seemingly endless depth.
Though invisible, the monster grew so large via satire that two philosophers, David Hume and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, actually
remarked on its existence. Those following resolved that they didn't actually believe the beast was real, but were forced to proceed
as if they did so that they could kill it.
"But you just can't kill the beast."
The monster discovered the nation. It liked nations even more than satire. It made many nations and dined upon them even while they
fed on one other's myths atop its nu-rock table. An experimental architecture project gone awry encrusted the whole earth in an aperiodic
quasicrystal. Via nations the monster reached the moon.
And there, in free space, the beast encountered the grid of art, which is neither real nor not-real. In art the beast saw itself. It saw itself
seeping into science through gaps, cracks in enormous buildings and dried paint, through frames and walls of infinitely scalable
modules -- the sparkle of math-dust announcing the edges of portals.
The gazing monkey fell silent and, by recourse to taste, paid homage. On a desert stage of pure math the monster would dream the
mainstream again, athwart the Milky Way.

The idea is to show the expressive variations within contemporary art and promote new young talents. We are proud to announce that we have this year specially invited many new emerging artists from the international and national art scene.
The gallery is excited to present new works by this year's invited guests: Michael Norre, Per Ahlmann, Julian Lee (UK), Frank Hoffman (DE), Mikkel S. Andersen, Nicki MacCubbing (UK), David Dellagi, Rustica Giuditta (IT) and Richard Meaghan (UK). Compound Editions is a collaborative fine art multiples publishing venture between Schroeder Romero and Winkleman Galleries.
Compound Editions is very pleased to announce the release of our fourth multiple, Vessel for Safekeeping (Survivalism), by New York-based artist Susan Graham. Each piece is a hand-sculpted and hand-glazed porcelain lacy box containing miniature scissors and credit card. The box is glazed a smoky white, and the scissors and credit card have pewter and blue glazes. **All of the pieces have variations due to the fact that they were made individually by hand and that the firing process is organic.
While the edition was inspired by the idea of erasure, the piece Graham ended up making is an enduring representation of financial identity.
We are pleased to announce that Christopher Gaillard is now the official advisor for Compound Editions!
Christopher Gaillard is an art consultant and appraiser based in New York. Prior to establishing his own business, Mr. Gaillard was Vice President and Head of Contemporary Prints at Sotheby's New York, and was responsible for record-breaking auctions, including the Kenneth Tyler and Tyler Graphics Collection of Contemporary Prints, which is the most successful single-owner auction of post-war prints to date. Mr. Gaillard was also responsible for establishing the world record auction price for post-war prints, when Barnett Newman's 18 Cantos sold at Sotheby's for over $2 million in May 2008. Mr. Gaillard is a board member of the International Print Center of New York, and Momenta Art in Brooklyn. He is also an auctioneer, and regularly presides over charity auctions throughout the United States.
Susan Graham has been included in numerous exhibitions in the United States and Europe including recent shows at the Tucson Museum Of Art, John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Michigan; the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, the Sherman Gallery at Boston University, Hunter College Leubsdorf Gallery, New York; the Musee d'art et d'industrie de Saint-Etienne, and the Musee International des Arts Modestes, Sete, France.

DUNK! is an artist run exhibition space located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in September 2005, it is dedicated to showing work by both emerging and more established Danish and international artists, across all medias and genres.
Since 2006 they have participated in Art Fairs across Denmark and Europe. In 2007 they began representing a selection of contemporary artists through their website, in the style of a commercial gallery. In January 2008 they were included in Flash Art International’s list of the Top 100 Galleries worldwide. And in October 2008 they curated their first major international group show outside of Denmark; Through the Looking Glass at The Studio Warehouse (SWG3) in Glasgow.
Over the Bridge represents a magnified cross section of Copenhagen’s progressive art scene. The work will investigate a diverse range of media from painting, drawing and sculpture, through to installation video and photography.
DUNK! has given each of the artist the total freedom to decide what they would like to show at the exhibition, and have invited them all to take part in the final installation of the show at CirkulationsCentralen.

Mark Raidpere
Mark Raidpere, born in 1975 in Estonia, has shown a consistent search of the dynamic relationship between the evolution of self-identity and social events in the time of post-cold war transition. His work, utilizing video as the main medium, explores the psychological states of those living in our time of radical social change. Often putting himself, his family and entourage in the centre of his research, Raidpere reveals with extraordinary sensitivity and efficiency the dilemma and contradiction of everyday life. Starting from intimate relationships, he brings his observation and testimony further to the social terrain: people on the edge of the society, urban violence and street life are important subject matters in his artistic endeavor. Through the artist's particular manipulation of the video camera characterized by an articulation of simplicity, stillness and objectivity, human traumas and social dramas are powerfully exposed to the public gaze. This kind of uncanny state of existence, resulted from drastic social changes, is increasingly becoming the condition of contemporary humanity. This tendency is particularly visible and intense in societies like the ex-Soviet, Baltic countries in permanent quests of identity and coherence in the turbulence of the "revolution" from communist system to liberal capitalist globalization. Raidpere, grown up in the midst of such a "revolution", successfully grasps this sentiment in his art work and defuses it in the ambience of the exhibition space. The audience is moved by Raidpere's seemingly simple presentation and inescapably immerged in puzzling, sometimes funny, but definitely unforgettable state of mind... "As Far Back as I Remember I Always Wanted to be Myself"
Over the course of the past ten years, Jérôme Hadey has travelled extensively around the globe, in search of others, in search of himself...
His travels and tribulations have led him to collaborate with american rappers, french ministerof foreign affairs, hollywood actors, as well as nobel peace prize winners.
Upon his return from one of his many trips, Jérôme rediscovered painting through writing:feeling an inner urge to share the thoughts he'd written about while traveling, he asked artists to illustrate them for him. One of the artists suggestedJérôme undertake the task himself, and so, he humbly took on thisenterprise.
Jérôme has had no formal artistic training, and has never hidden his lack of mastery.
The result is an interesting series of paintings that oscillate between the realms of still-life and graffiti, book pages and posters; all of the paintings have been executed in a simple manner, without flourishes, reminding us of the spontaniety and innocence of childhood, of the hope and ideals that are a driving force in our teens, and that seem to slowly fade away.
Jérôme's work has us question our concept of modernity, technological advances and cultural evolutionand how they affect our every day lives.
The reflection that his work reveals -- for example "My ex is in a relationship", (a work on a tight,barely prepared canvas engraved with a barbecue skewer) -- amuses us at first, before leaving us face to face with ourselves like a mirror reflecting our own thoughts.
In the end, with Jérôme Hadey, we inevitably return to thought.
Together with his partners from Outlines, Music producer Irfane Khan-Acito and Graffiti artist Jay One, they invite you to the premier of their Musical exhibition series starting in Berlin May 29th 2009.

Clare Rojas
Kavi Gupta Gallery is pleased to present our second solo exhibition of new
work by San Francisco based artist Clare Rojas.
Clare Rojas is well known for her intimate gouache paintings and expansive
wall-based murals and installations that feel as if they have been plucked
out of the pages of a fairy tale resonating as both familiar and
fantastically imagined. Her distinctive intricately detailed painting style
utilizing flat areas of color and her limited palette brings to mind both an
expansive history of the craft movement as well as the art of printmaking.
Rojas's imagery takes hints from folk art such as quilting or pottery and
recurring symbols and patterns can be linked to Amish vernacular, Russian
Matryoshka dolls, Native American textiles as well as contemporary American
comic books.
Clare Rojas's latest exhibition at Kavi Gupta will feature a complete
immersion into the artist's invented world. The gallery will be completely
transformed into a "home" for her works as the walls are colorfully painted
and decorative molding transforms the space into a living environment. Large
framed wall paintings, sculptures and groupings of Rojas's signature
paintings hang from wooden pegs articulating a complete constructed
narrative. Animals, women and men interact within flattened floral
landscapes. Women bleed their powers into the sky. Foliage, flowers and
trees blend with abstract and often surreal pattern and space. The
depictions themselves are allegorical; her portrayals of women are
simultaneously serene, free, painful and powerful.
Clare Rojas (b. 1976) lives and works in San Francisco. Solo museum shows
include Riverside Art Museum, CA ; The Rose Art Museum, Boston; Museo De
Arte Comtemporaneo De Castilla y Leon; Museum Het Domein, Sittard; Ulrich
Museum of Art, Wichita; Knoxville Museum of Art and the Museum of
Contemporary Art, Chicago. Rojas has also had solo exhibitions at Deitch
Projects, NY; Modern Art, London; Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco and
Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen.
